Using Real-World Data to Measure Value in Orthopaedics
Orthopaedic conditions affect more than half of the U.S. population, account for nearly 1 in 5 healthcare visits, and annually exceed $176 billion in direct healthcare costs.
A variety of treatment alternatives exists for most orthopaedic conditions and some suggest that invasive and expensive orthopaedic treatments are overused. Because of difficulties with traditional research methods - randomization and blinding - little evidence has been developed to suggest that changing current treatments can improve patient outcomes or lower costs.
Our mission is to fill this void of knowledge through our unique ability to define, collect, manage and analysis real-world orthopedic patient data for all stakeholders involved in the industry. Our Orthopaedic Patient Data Repository (OPDR) follows orthopaedic patients throughout their episodes of care and documents patient characteristics, treatment choices, and outcomes required to fill this evidence gap. The OPDR can be used to assess the real-world value of orthopaedic treatments and measure quality and provider performance.
For Providers • Use our OPDR as the foundation for “practice-based evidence”. Our analysis can summarize treatment and outcome histories for patients like a current patient so provided evidence tailored to the patient. • Collect and summarize the goals, preferences and beliefs of patients prior to consultation enabling the provider to provide information and treatment recommendations tailored to the patient. • Develop risk-adjusted provider performance measures.
For Device and Drug Manufacturers • Enable manufactures to follow patients who chose their treatments to measures outcomes required for post-marketing reporting. • Provide assessments across broad and diverse populations usually unavailable to premarket studies necessary for product approval. • Provide the basis for understanding factors related to the choice of treatments of interest to the manufacturer.
For Patients • Provide readily available information on how similar patients have been treated in the past along with outcome information by treatment. • Create communication portals through which patients express treatment goals and beliefs to their providers.
